Our work with Neurofeedback, Muscle (EMG), and Finger Temperature biofeedback dates to 1971. That year Dr. Robert D. Prall, Clinical Psychologist, went to the Menninger Foundation’s Laboratory for Voluntary Controls and brought the instrumentation back to Houston. In 1975 Vicki A. Jones, LCSW, Sr. Fellow-BCIA joined Dr. Prall in teaching others to “self-regulate” using biofeedback and other techniques. With these combined approaches, hundreds of children and adults enjoy much more satisfying lives because of their inner control.
"Neurofeedback is the safe, effective
and long-lasting remedy for ADHD."
As a worried parent of an ADHD child, you are not alone in wanting to find out as much as you can about how to help your child. At Smarter Way we understand the problems that treating ADHD presents for you, your child, and your child’s doctors, too.

Children Are in a Bind
Children with ADHD live with the knowledge that their best is usually not good enough. So, they suffer both from difficulties of focusing their attention and with the effects that their ADHD causes, too.
Michael, 10 years old
Michael had always been extremely active. At 5 years old he was suspended from kindergarten for his hyperactive behavior. Even though he was very intelligent, he couldn’t control his impulsivity and hyperactivity.  He distracted the other students and annoyed his teachers. So his troubles at school continued. He started taking stimulant medication at age 5 and by age 10, he was so small people thought he was only 6 or 7 years old.

Michael had to keep taking stimulant medication for ADHD and additional medications for his other problems, which included temper outbursts and sullen moods. Finally, his school counselor referred him to Smarter Way for Neurofeedback Training.
At Michael’s eighth weekly neurofeedback training session with Vicki Jones, he was beginning to show signs of better behavior at home. For one thing, Michael started speaking to his stepfather when he came home from work. Before, Michael had just ignored him. With a little more Neurofeedback Training, Michael started having actual conversations with his stepfather.

By the time Michael had completed 30 weekly sessions, it was obvious to everyone that he was consistently responding to life very differently than he had before.

Teachers also notice changes in the children’s attitudes towards school. They tell us that children’s attitudes change from “I don’t care” to wanting to learn. Grades frequently improve from failing to making A’s in reading, math, conduct and other subjects.

You are disheartened that as soon as the medication for ADHD wears off, the symptoms come right back. You can benefit from the guidance of qualified professionals in our offices. Smarter Way helps you handle problems affecting your child’s grades and relationships with friends and family.
Doctors Are in a Bind
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies stimulant medications as controlled substances. So, writing and filling prescriptions for these medications is much more difficult than writing and filling other prescriptions. The majority of doctors who prescribe stimulant medications say it is a burden for themselves and for parents.

Neurofeedback: An Effective Behavioral Solution to Use with or without Medication
Neurofeedback is the safe, effective, and long-lasting remedy for ADHD. It meets the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s clinical guidelines for behavioral management of ADHD. It may be used by itself or in combination with medication(s) and counseling/therapy. Research published since the 1970’s, before the term ADHD was adopted, attests to the effectiveness of Neurofeedback Training.

He seldom had outbursts of anger, but when he did, he automatically removed himself from the situation until his mood had passed.

Three years after he completed Neurofeedback Training, his mother continues to report that Michael is doing wonderfully.

Children enjoy Neurofeedback Therapy with Smarter Way. They like
  • Sleeping better
  • Getting along with their family and friends better
  • Making better grades at school
Many parents tell us, “Getting my child up in the morning used to be a fight, and now s/he gets up easily.” Children, on the other hand, experience their new-found success a bit differently. They tell us, “Mom’s doing better.”

In our clinic, some parents report important, observable improvements in their children’s behaviors after the very first Neurofeedback Therapy session. Most parents report more sustained, significant differences before 8 sessions have been completed. These differences have included
  • My child can remember where she puts things, like her glasses
  • My child gets up in the mornings ‘without a fight’
  • My child has stopped wetting the bed
