TREATMENT GOALS FOR ADHD PATIENTS

The Treatment Goals for the ADHD Patient are : Increase attention Reduce impulsivity Reduce hyperactivity To get the best treatment results for ADHD the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using two proven therapies that work together, medication and behavior therapy. Each is also used by itself.

1. Medication Therapy :

You have probably heard of the stimulant medications Ritalin® and Adderall®. They are the most common medications for ADHD. The nonstimulant drug Straterra® is sometimes prescribed to treat ADHD.

2. Behavior Therapy :

The noninvasive, safe, proven behavior therapy treatment for ADHD is EEG Biofeedback therapy, also called Brainwave Biofeedback and Neurofeedback. EEG Biofeedback therapy teaches the brain to work better and is especially useful when :

Medication isn’t controlling the symptoms

Less medication is desired

Patients won’t take medication

A natural treatment is preferred. If you would like to know more see   Treatment Success.

EEG Biofeedback Therapy Has Many Benefits  :

EEG Biofeedback therapy for ADHD uses the brain as its own medicine. This results in better attention and thoughtfulness. Better attention and thoughtfulness result in financial savings, increased productivity, and greater self-esteem.

EEG Biofeedback therapy results are effective and long lasting. They increase the quality of life. They increase productivity. They save time and money in many ways.

EEG Biofeedback therapy for people taking medicine usually makes medication more effective. So, it takes less medication to control the symptoms of ADHD. That results in both health and financial benefits.

EEG Biofeedback therapy usually reduces the number of accidents due to mind-wandering, or to acting without thinking. Again, the results affect health and finances positively in the following ways

Fewer visits to the emergency room

Fewer dental visits for broken teeth

Fewer traffic accidents

Fewer legal expenses

Fewer car repairs

Lower car insurance rates

Fewer lost days at work

Fewer stressful incidents toward family members requiring medical    attention afterward

Putting It All Together : Nathan’s Story

Nathan was 13 years old when he came for EEG biofeedback because he had Tourette’s Syndrome and made loud, uncontrollable sounds. He also had ADHD. His conduct was getting worse and worse. The medications weren’t helping as much as they needed to. His social life was suffering, too. For example, he couldn’t go to his friend’s for sleepovers because he would forget to take his medicine, and then he would get loud and rowdy. He attended middle school in a large public school system, and the school counselor worked with Nathan and his mom to place him in a special school within the system set up for students with special needs.

Nathan was about to be expelled from the special school because of his “mouthiness” and inappropriate behaviors. He talked back to his teachers, to the principal, and generally misbehaved.

Nathan’s mother was a single mom who worked hard to support them, and she also worked hard doing all she could to help Nathan overcome his difficulties. When doing EEG Biofeedback therapy with Vicki Jones, they discussed other things that might help Nathan, including nutrition and essential oils. In their discussion of nutrition Nathan’s mom realized that carbohydrates for breakfast and carbohydrates for lunch lacked the protein Nathan’s brain needed to work well. He liked hard-boiled eggs and he liked protein shakes. So he started eating protein every morning. The right nutrition gave Nathan’s growing body and brain the kind of food he needed to perform his best.

At Vicki’s recommendation Nathan’s mom also got him some peppermint essential oil to use in the mornings to help him wake up. He dabbed it behind his ears, under his nose, and on the top of his head. Mom could really tell the difference, and one morning Nathan came to breakfast and she could see that he was sleepier than usual. She asked, “Nathan, did you use your peppermint essential oil this morning?” “No,” he replied, which was no surprise to her. “Well, young man, you march right back in there and use it.”

Fortunately, just in time, Nathan’s EEG biofeedback therapy and his mother’s behavioral techniques took hold consistently. Nathan graduated from the special school. Then he attended regular school and took just a few special education classes. Besides that, he became an invited guest at sleepovers because he remembered to take his medicine!
