SMARTER WAY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Exactly what happens during the first EEG Biofeedback therapy session?
A. You tell the EEG Biofeedback therapist your history and the therapist asks you some questions. A good therapist helps you remember things you may have forgotten or understands your experiences in important new ways.
To measure your brain activity your therapist will use some water-soluble glue to temporarily attach some sensors to your scalp in order to measure your brain activity. They don’t use needles; so it won’t hurt. Your therapist may also give you “paper and pencil” test to get additional helpful information. Then, your therapist puts all this information together to give you the exact kind of individual treatment you deserve. If you would like to know more see Pinpointing the Problem.

Q. How does EEG Biofeedback Therapy measure my brain activity?
A. After you get “Wired Up” the resulting brain signals “talk to” the computer over very thin wires. Signals are sent from the computer over the light frames and headphones and when your brain reacts in the desirable way the computer instantly turns on a light. This message, or feedback goes from your eyes to the rest of your brain and that’s how your brain learns to win over ADHD.”

Q. What happens after the first EEG Biofeedback session?
A. You talk with your therapist about what you’ve done since your last session. EEG Biofeedback Therapy is like learning anything new; you do it again and again until you know how to do it automatically without thinking.
During the EEG Biofeedback therapy session you can read, do math, write, or do any paperwork. The therapist may teach you some techniques like progressive relaxation or may give you suggestions for ways of learning more easily. Or, you can just sit back and enjoy the process. The choice is yours!

Q. How long is a course of EEG Biofeedback therapy for ADHD?
A.
Most courses of EEG Biofeedback therapy are between 20 and 40 sessions. Progress reviews occur at the end of each session, and an in-depth review takes place at least every 10th session. Important decisions about continuing treatment take place at any time.

Q. How long is each EEG Biofeedback therapy session?
A.
Each of Smarter Way’s EEG Biofeedback therapy sessions is about 50 minutes long. Vicki Jones personally works with the client for the entire 50 minutes. This may be the secret to why most of her clients receive significant benefits by 8 sessions and usually reach their goals even before 20 sessions.

Q. How often do I go for EEG Biofeedback therapy?
A.
Therapy sessions take place from one time a week up to three times a day. As long as three hours separate each experience, it is a “new learning” experience for the brain. So whatever scheduling works for you is available. Each person and their situations are unique. For instance, school students may come more often during vacation times so they can get ready for school. Business people come when they are in Houston on business.

If you would like to know more about scheduling an appointment see the Order Page.

Q. How important is it to have a biofeedback therapist? Why can’t I just do it on my own?
A.
Studies show that biofeedback for whatever condition, including ADHD, works only when you have a good biofeedback therapist. Successful EEG Biofeedback therapy for ADHD has three parts: The willing person with ADHD, the caring biofeedback therapist, and the biofeedback instrument itself. You bring the first part and we at Smarter Way bring the rest; just as your teachers assist you in school, and your coach helps train you in a sport.

Q. What are the costs and savings of EEG Biofeedback therapy?
A.
The national costs of EEG Biofeedback therapy varies from patient to patient depending on individual circumstances. Statistics show that within three years EEG Biofeedback therapy for ADHD costs less than medication for three years. Besides that EEG Biofeedback therapy saves money in other ways, too. For example attention is better so there are fewer accidents. The Professionals at Smarter Way always lay out the costs of a therapy for you prior to beginning a course of therapy.

If you would like to know more see Treatment Goals.

Q. Does health insurance cover EEG Biofeedback therapy for ADHD?
A.
Some health insurance policies cover EEG Biofeedback Therapy in the treatment of ADHD. Check with your plan to find out what coverage your insurance company includes in your plan.

Q. What can I do at home to enhance my ADHD therapies?
A.

Use selected prerecorded materials for greater relaxation, better test-taking and improved self-esteem. Vicki’s tapes Quick Relaxer and Right Answers work especially well for these situations.
