The success rate of EEG Biofeedback therapy is impressive. Parents, teachers, and counselors agree. They say children with ADHD who have EEG Biofeedback therapy gain social skills, conduct themselves better, make better grades, and have more self-esteem. They can also plan, organize, and maintain their attention much better. In schoolwork this means they get better grades in reading, spelling, and math.
Stephen’s Story
Memory, Concentration…and a Whole Lot More
Before EEG Biofeedback therapy 7-year-old Stephen’s mother was desperate. She was frustrated that as an elementary school teacher she couldn’t help her own child. He was failing reading. When writing he printed everything backward, right to left. His papers were readable only by reflecting them in a mirror and reading them from the mirror. Then, they made perfect sense. In arithmetic he wrote numbers backwards and transposed them. During the night he walked in his sleep.
The first time Stephen came in to the Smarter Way offices, he was polite and well mannered. His ability to redirect his desire to be physically active was impressive. Standing in place, he jumped into the air, made a backwards somersault, and landed on his feet, right where he had been standing. Twice.
From the beginning it was clear to us that treatment for Stephen’s ADHD would include EEG Biofeedback therapy. However, to aid his overall relaxation levels, we decided to teach him some other techniques first.
EMG (electromyography) Biofeedback to measure muscle activity and Finger Temperature Biofeedback monitored how well he was learning these skills, including progressive relaxation and diaphragmatic breathing. On Session 5 Mom announced, “Everything’s better. Mama’s getting her sleep because Stephen isn’t sleepwalking any more.”
On Session 6 Stephen began EEG Biofeedback therapy. Over time, his fine motor skills improved, and he sometimes got 100’s on his math tests. His reading grade climbed from “F” to “B+.” In fact all of his grades improved and his conduct improved too.
By Session 14 Stephen and his 9 year-old sister played together continuously for six hours one day when it was raining outside. Before EEG Biofeedback therapy, Mom said the two “fought constantly.” His grandparents, who knew nothing about his EEG Biofeedback therapy, asked what had happened, because he could now sit quietly on the organ bench next to his grandmother through an entire church service.
Lasting Effects of EEG Biofeedback Therapy
Good Short-term Success Rates of EEG Biofeedback
The success rates of EEG Biofeedback therapy are impressive. Overall, noted neuroscientist Frank Duffy, M.D., says, "The literature, which lacks any negative study of substance, suggests that EEG Biofeedback therapy should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely used."
Parents, teachers, and counselors agree. They say children with ADHD who have EEG Biofeedback therapy gain social skills, better conduct, and more self-esteem. They can also plan, organize, and maintain their attention much better. In school work, this means they get better grades in reading, spelling, and/or math.
Good Long-term Success Rates of EEG Biofeedback
At least 70% of the people using EEG Biofeedback respond quite well, and afterwards reports from 16 months to 10 years later show the results last. Patients learn to use their brains more efficiently. The experience is more like riding a bicycle than remembering facts. People who learn better ways of using their brains find more and more situations every day to think about in new ways. So, the effects get stronger as time goes on. Like riding a bicycle: it gets easier, faster, and more automatic as time goes on.
For more than 20 years evidence published in scientific journals around the world shows that EEG Biofeedback therapy works well both in the short term and in the long term for future use. Recent studies meet all the criteria for “controlled outcome studies.”
